Who We Are
Aspiring Solicitors (otherwise known as AS) is an employability platform. By enabling those from underrepresented backgrounds (found HERE) to access the legal profession, AS’ goal is to increase diversity in the industry—supporting members throughout the application process. This is anything from researching law firms and in-house teams, to writing applications and developing vital skills for assessment centres, to attending Vacation Schemes and securing a Training Contract.
Aspiring Solicitors also run mentoring schemes either through its employability team (such as AS Aspire and AS First) or its affiliates (such as Freshfields Start, Hogan Lovells / Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Barclays / TLT). These months-long programmes are invaluable resources when researching law firms, improving application forms, preparing for assessment centres, and testing your commercial awareness. They provide regular telephone and email contact with an assigned ‘mentor’ who will work with you to help you secure a vacation scheme and/or training contract. These programmes have historically proven incredibly successful—but require a more comprehensive application which can also be found under ‘Member Services’ on the AS website. A full list of opportunities can be also found there.
AS also organise Legal Work Experience with in-house teams—again, with a more comprehensive application process advertised on the website. These include the Government Legal Department, Barclays, Siemens plc, amongst others. These schemes offer candidates a unique opportunity not found elsewhere and ensures those from under-represented backgrounds can reach all corners of the legal industry—not ‘just’ law firms.
Members can also make use of the website as a platform to contact and make connections with AS Professional Ambassadors—legal professionals from affiliated law firms. Through the ‘Member Services’ tab, ambassadors can be found either by their firm or diversity strands for their insights and advice. Members can also find these ambassadors by their respective firms through the ‘Diversity Directory’ which is continually updated with new members.
